As the Roots School System commemorates its 37th anniversary on April 10, 2025, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on its evolution and the profound contributions of its founders, particularly Mrs. Riffat Mushtaq and her daughter, the late Dr. Khadija Mushtaq.
In 1988, Mrs. Riffat Mushtaq established the first Roots School at 74 Harley Street, Rawalpindi. Her vision was to introduce the Montessori method to the twin cities, emphasizing a child-centered approach to education. This initiative laid the groundwork for what would become a transformative educational movement in Pakistan.
Building upon this foundation, Mrs. Mushtaq’s children expanded the institution’s horizons:
Among these expansions, Dr. Khadija Mushtaq’s contributions stand out prominently. Holding a Master’s in Economics from Quaid-i-Azam University, she began her career as an educator, eventually becoming the CEO of Roots IVY International Schools and Colleges. Under her leadership, Roots IVY became synonymous with academic excellence and innovation. She was instrumental in launching the University of London International Programme at Roots, providing Pakistani students with access to globally recognized degrees.
Dr. Khadija’s dedication earned her numerous accolades, including the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Distinction) in 2010, making her the youngest educationist to receive this honor. She also received the Yale Educator Award in 2009 and the Best Counsellor Award from MIT in 2010. Beyond academics, she championed women’s empowerment and youth development, notably through her involvement with the “Liberating the Girl Child Foundation.”
Tragically, Dr. Khadija Mushtaq passed away on January 14, 2025, after battling cancer. Her legacy, however, continues to inspire and shape the educational landscape of Pakistan.
Today, the Roots School System stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders. From a single Montessori school, it has grown into a comprehensive educational network, nurturing students from early childhood through to undergraduate levels. The institution remains committed to holistic development, blending academic rigor with extracurricular opportunities, and upholding values of peace, tolerance, and global citizenship.
As we celebrate this 37-year journey, we honor the indelible marks left by Mrs. Riffat Mushtaq and Dr. Khadija Mushtaq, whose unwavering commitment to education has illuminated the paths of countless students and will continue to do so for generations to come.
The 37th anniversary is not just a milestone—it’s a reminder of what education can achieve when driven by passion, purpose, and vision. Roots School System has never settled for the status quo. It has continuously pushed the envelope, adapting to global trends while staying rooted in core values that prioritize student growth, integrity, and innovation.
Even after her passing, Dr. Khadija Mushtaq’s vision is alive in every classroom, every student who dares to dream bigger, and every graduate who steps into the world more confident, capable, and aware. Her commitment to international exposure, global citizenship, and academic freedom set a standard that the current leadership continues to uphold. From Model UN conferences to global university placements, the Roots IVY ecosystem remains a launchpad for world changers.
What started as a family-led initiative has grown into a nationwide movement, yet it still carries the spirit of its beginnings—a place where educators lead with heart, where every student matters, and where learning isn’t confined to textbooks. This anniversary isn’t just about the past. It’s also about what’s coming: new campuses, new collaborations, new opportunities to challenge what’s possible in education.
As the next generation of Roots leadership steps forward, they carry with them not just an institution, but a legacy built on courage, resilience, and vision. Here’s to 37 years—and to many more ahead.
